Choosing the correct method of rehabilitation care is crucial to ensuring successful treatment and ultimately complete recovery. The first thing that is recommended when choosing a care facility for rehabilitation purposes, is deciding whether to place the patient in outpatient or inpatient care. This choice will depend on the patience’s direct needs. The more information and knowledge the patient has the better prepared they will be once they enter a care facility.

Inpatient or residential facilities offer a completely immersive opportunity for the patient. It allows for the patient to seclude themselves from outside daily distractions and triggers that might cause the patient to relapse or “cheat”. For 24 hours, 7 days a week the patient’s main priority is getting well. These are especially effective for patients who do not have adequate and sufficient external support structures to help them through their rehabilitation process. Inpatient programmes can run for 30 days, 60 days or even up to 90 days depending on the level of addiction and the type of addiction.

There are also extended-care inpatient facilities that can last for between 6-18 months. These are usually necessary when the individual is more likely to relapse if they are returned to their environment. The point of these is to allow for the individual’s circumstances to change and often include career advice and possibly assisting with finding of employment or moving that individual out of a particular neighbourhood.

These often offer a comprehensive detoxing programme which includes therapy and psychological testing, regular drug testing, exercise regimes, a nutritional diet and group counselling. They also offer a full cold turkey treatment, where your body comes off the drugs or alcohol naturally, this period is often very challenging and would require consistent care and evaluation of the patient. During this time patient will suffer severe withdrawal symptoms depending on the severity of their addiction, for this very reason alone patients are advised 24 hour supervision as their bodies are fragile and in a critical state needing consistent professional evaluation.

Outpatient facilities are also something a patient can consider. These are less intrusive as you are not under constant supervision. They are also affordable as you don’t need to spend money on paying for boarding costs and other costs at an inpatient care facility. These are often recommended for individuals who suffer from more psychological forms of addictive behaviour. These ranging from sex addiction, pornography addiction, gambling addiction and other psychologically driven addictions.

This is because they mostly consist of psychological treatments such as counselling, discussion panels or behaviour analysis. They can last for a full day of about 8 hours or can be 1-2 hours depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. They often will involve one on one sessions with a counsellor, as well as various group activities with other patients who are suffering the same or similar addictions.

Whether one selects inpatient care or outpatient care, it is imperative that extensive research is conducted and the potential patient assessed and evaluated for suitability of course of treatment.

The mentality and behavior of drug addicts and alcoholics is wholly irrational until you understand that they are completely powerless over their addiction and unless they have structured help, they have no hope.” – Russell Brand
